Yet, in this asymmetrical recognition, the desire for mutual recognition is not satisfied. The weaker self, fearful for their death, enter into a life of desolate servitude under the master. However, they soon realize that death is not the way to reach any sort of mutual recognition. A life and death struggle to be the necessary “I” ensues. But as the primitive self encounters another self, they actually mistake each other for objects at first. To achieve the goal of Absolute Knowing, mutual recognition between consciousnesses is a critical prerequisite. Hegel’s goal, in his Phenomenology, is to lead us to Absolute Knowing which is complete self-consciousness at the end of world-history.
